Aric was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes in March 2022. He was originally at IACS Shelter Rescue Team (formerly called IACS Rescue) and Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) before HSotD pulled him. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek and the rescue is based out of Chesterton in Northwest Indiana (NWI).
Aric was “rescue only” at the Indy shelter because he was very skittish. He had been surrendered to the shelter by a good Samaritan who had claimed to witness him being hit with a broom and thrown down some stairs. Despite his fearfulness, Aric was a staff and volunteer favorite at IACS. Shelter records listed Aric as one year old.
In March 2022, Humane Society of the Dunes had agreed to take 3 “rescue only” dogs from IACS, Feather, Imzatti, and Aric. An IACS staff member who knew them volunteered to transport them from Indianapolis. As she helped load Aric into Jane’s car, Jane told her that she would be adopting Aric as her own pet. She told the same thing to an IACS volunteer who had donated to HSotD in a PayPal thank you note. Aric was one of multiple dogs that Jane told staff or volunteers she would adopt, but ultimately did not adopt.
In February 2023, after concerns about Humane Society of the Dunes had been brought up numerous times to the IACS Rescue coordinator, the coordinator and an IACS volunteer drove up to Chesterton to visit the HSotD “shelter”. The “shelter” is a pole barn on Jane’s own residential property, and it is not open to the public. There were no rescue animals on site when IACS visited for their pre-arranged inspection. Jane’s own pet dogs Greta, Jack Dozer, and Misty (from IACS) were present but she claimed her 4th dog, Nixon (from IACS, see our post about Nixon) was having a “spa day”. Aric was not there and she did not claim to own him at the time, and if Jane mentioned him, it wasn’t listed in the IACS report about the visit.
In December 2023, IACS stopped allowing Humane Society of the Dunes to pull animals because of concerns brought up by an IACS volunteer at their public advisory board meetings.
In February 2024, Humane Society of the Dunes posted a sudden burst of unusual “updates” on several of the IACS animals, after years of their Facebook page being largely inactive. They did not post an update on Aric then or at any other time. On another of the “update” posts, the person who had transported Aric and been told by Jane she would be adopting him, asked for an update on him. Jane stated that they usually didn’t ask for updates from adopters, and made no mention of her own supposed adoption of Aric or why she did not ultimately keep him like she had said she would.
We are offering $100 for proof of Aric’s whereabouts today. He’d be about 4 years old now. Please share our posts and engage with them. We are trying to find answers but we can’t do it without your help. Aric is one of 110+ animals that Humane Society of the Dunes pulled from the city shelter in Indianapolis who we are hoping for updates on.
