‼️$200 for proof of Mochi the cat’s whereabouts. Have you seen him? If you fostered or adopted him, or if you know something, please reach out.‼️ Please share this post!

Mochi was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes on May 21, 2023. He was originally at Indianapolis Animal Care Services before HSotD pulled him. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek and the rescue is based out of Chesterton in Northwest Indiana (NWI).

Although “rescue only” animals are normally posted by the IACS Shelter Rescue Team page (formerly called IACS Rescue), there was no post made by them about Mochi. Oftentimes the rescue coordinator at IACS would reach out to rescues privately without posting the animals publicly, so this was not an uncommon occurrence.

Mochi may have been rescue only because of his substantial medical history at IACS, which we obtained through public records requests, although at one point he was also available for adoption so we aren’t clear why he went to Humane Society of the Dunes. Cats such as Mochi with “unique” features often get adopted quickly at the shelter.

Mochi is seen looking upwards towards the camera and a hand putting or holding his neck.

Mochi was at IACS about 2 months prior to going to Humane Society of the Dunes. During his time at the Indy shelter, he was initially non-weight bearing in his rear left leg. He had a wound/abscess on that paw that was noted on intake, and again by the vet who neutered him. During his neuter it was also noted he had dirty ears, possibly had ear mites, and had a grade 3 heart murmur. X-rays at IACS revealed he had broken toes, which were amputated by the shelter vet. Mochi had diarrhea also, and it was discovered he had coccidia, for which he had repeated treatment. He had some bad teeth, so he had to undergo an additional surgery to remove a couple of teeth and have a cleaning. After he had a vet recheck for the toe amputation, the shelter vet stated in his med records that Mochi would be made available for adoption. One of the closures didn’t heal correctly where a tooth was extracted, so he had a third surgery to fix that issue. He was scheduled for a vet recheck after that at IACS, but went to Humane Society of the Dunes before that was completed.

When Mochi left for Humane Society of the Dunes, Jane pulled 3 other cats from IACS on the same day:

  • 👉Jill (10 years old, persistent URI and bad teeth)
  • 👉Gerald (4 months old, fractured right femur)
  • 👉Nugget (7 year old Siamese, possibly needed enucleation, was pregnant but miscarried several fetuses)
  • ⏰We have not yet posted some of these cats because they were never posted by the IACS Rescue page either and we were waiting on their medical history public records requests to arrive

After these cats went to Humane Society of the Dunes, no updates were ever posted about any of them. They went to the rescue with no accompanying pledges because none of them had been posted by IACS. Even though Jane took in several cats who would need further vet care that day, she never posted any fundraisers for their care.

No fosters or adopters of any of these cats (nor any other IACS animals that went to HSotD) have come forward, and Jane Hullsiek has not been forthcoming with updates when asked previously.

Where is Mochi today? There is $200* available to anyone who knows the answer to that question and is willing to provide some proof. It’s never too late to tell the truth.
