Dorothy was rescued from Indianapolis Animal Care Services by Jane Hullsiek with Humane Society of the Dunes on September 27, 2022. Jane is the the founder of the rescue and the rescue is based out of Chesterton in Northwest Indiana (NWI). Dorothy was never posted by the IACS Shelter Rescue Team page until her freedom ride. A public records request for her medical history and notes from IACS revealed she was suffering from a respiratory infection during her brief stay at the Indy shelter. Otherwise she was young and in good health.

Jane never posted anything about Dorothy until February of 2024 when she posted a number of questionable “updates” about several animals she had pulled from Indy. Most of the “updates” she posted were photos she had taken in her own home or seemingly in her yard. However, the update photo on Dorothy was notable because it was one of the few that didn’t seem to be at Jane’s property or home. The porch and wall shown in the photo don’t match Jane’s home as shown in the inspection report photos from IACS.

If you adopted Dorothy, now known as Phylis, please reach out by private message to our facebook page, or you may contact us through the form on our website.

Update June 6: we have decided to no longer offer money to speak to the adopter of Dorothy. A neighbor of Jane’s says that another neighbor adopted Dorothy. We are glad she is safe but part of the purpose of offering money is to understand how Jane gets animals adopted with no social media. Presumably the other ~110 animals were not all adopted by people she personally knows? It’s not really useful for us to find out that a person who is known for acquiring animals occasionally gives them to people she knows. We are more interested in the operation of the “rescue”.

Dorothy AKA "Phylis" - a dog that was 'rescued' by the Northwest Indiana (NWI) Humane Society of the Dunes (founded by Jane Hullsiek) in Chesterton.
