Alice was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes on April 17, 2023. She was originally at Indianapolis Animal Care Services before HSotD pulled her. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek and the rescue is based out of Chesterton in Northwest Indiana (NWI).

Although “rescue only” animals are normally posted by the IACS Shelter Rescue Team page (formerly called IACS Rescue), there was no post made by them about Alice when she was at the shelter. Oftentimes the rescue coordinator at IACS would reach out to rescues privately without posting the animals publicly, so this was not an uncommon occurrence.

From public records requests, we know that Alice came to the Indy shelter on April 8, 2023 after her owner died. Although initially described as fearful on intake, the medical staff who examined her described her as calm and quiet and tolerant of all handling during her exam. Other than flea dirt and thin fur on her back, and long nails, Alice seemed to have been in good health. Her medical exam showed no staining or tartar on her teeth and she was estimated as 1 year old. Oftentimes, small dogs at IACS get pulled by rescues rather than becoming available for adoption from the shelter directly.

The IACS Rescue page posted a “freedom ride” photo featuring Alice when she left the shelter, but it didn’t include her name (she was listed as a senior chihuahua, contrary to her medical records listing her as 1 year old). Jane never posted anything about Alice after she got her, nor the dog she pulled from IACS on the same day (Oreo).

Where is Alice today? There is $200* available to anyone who knows the answer to that question and is willing to provide some proof. She could be any age from 3 years old to a senior, although the condition of her teeth at IACS indicated she was young.
