Kenzi was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes on January 14, 2020. She was originally at IACS Shelter Rescue Team (formerly called IACS Rescue) and Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) before HSotD pulled her. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek and the rescue is based out of Chesterton in Northwest Indiana (NWI).
Kenzi was “rescue only” at the Indy shelter because she had come in with an injured back leg and the veterinarian at IACS had determined she would need an amputation or orthopedic surgery. Kenzi was described as a silly, social happy girl. She did great during her dog test at IACS.
The day after she went to them, Humane Society of the Dunes posted an update about Kenzi showing that her leg had been amputated and stated that Kenzi loved sleeping on the couch with her blankie. It was the only update they ever shared of Kenzi.
On their website, Humane Society of the Dunes has photos of a number of animals they rescued, including a photo of Kenzi with the same couch and blanket, stating “SOPHIE: We needed to amputate Sophie’s leg due to prior abuse.” It is unclear why Jane said it was due to prior abuse when Kenzi was found as a stray before coming to IACS so her history was not known, nor why she called her Sophie. Perhaps her foster or adopter renamed her, although the photo Jane shared on the website seems to be from the same timeframe as the Facebook photo given she’s on the same couch, same blanket, and has the same freshly shaved hip area…
The couch in Kenzi’s photo is the same one a few of the other IACS dogs appeared on in “updates” posted by Humane Society of the Dunes on their (now deleted) Facebook page, including Aric and Rootbeer. It’s the couch in the pole barn “shelter” that IACS inspected and took photos of in 2023. Seemingly most or all of the update photos ever posted by Humane Society of the Dunes were on Jane’s own property, not in any of the 69 foster homes she claimed to have.
We are offering $100 for proof of Kenzi’s whereabouts today. She’d be about 6 years old now and is missing a back leg. Please share our posts and engage with them. We would like to speak to anyone who adopted from or fostered for Humane Society of the Dunes, or anyone who has information.
