Oreo was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes in April 2023. He was originally at IACS Shelter Rescue Team (formerly called IACS Rescue) and Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) before HSotD pulled him. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek. Oreo needed rescue from the shelter because he was being difficult to handle in the kennels, although he had a very sweet demeanor with people when not kenneled. He did not pass his dog test and he had ear infections.
No updates were ever posted about Oreo by Humane Society of the Dunes (based out of Northwest Indiana (NWI)). In December 2023, concerns about the legitimacy of Humane Society of the Dunes were brought up during the public comment period at an IACS advisory board meeting. In early January 2024, a group of 14 donors wrote a formal letter to Jane Hullsiek asking for updates on the outcomes for 53 of the 110+ animals she had taken from IACS, for whom they had donated. Oreo was one of the animals in question. The letter also asked questions about the rescue’s operations such as board members’ names, number of foster homes, adoption process, etc. Jane responded the next day to say she would send the letter to her lawyer, then never responded again.
Due to the lack of updates and questions about the legitimacy of the few “updates” posted, donors filed a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s office about possible misuse of donor funds. The AG office Consumer Protection Division wrote back to state that “we believe your complaint warrants further review” and began an investigation, which is still ongoing.
We are offering $100 for proof of Oreo’s whereabouts today. If you know where he is, reach out.
