Bishop was “rescued” by Humane Society of the Dunes in October 2023. He was originally at IACS Rescue and Indianapolis Animal Care Services before HSotD pulled him. The founder of the rescue is Jane Hullsiek. She also goes by her first name Georgia. Bishop was a ~10 month old German Shepherd mix who needed rescue from the shelter because of behavior. For a while, he was “staff only” meaning he was not able to be handled by volunteers due to safety concerns. Although many volunteers and staff adored him, he had begun to snap and nip at people when brought back to his kennel due to stress, in addition to displaying jumpy and mouthy behaviors in the outside runs. He desperately needed out of the shelter environment to save his life. He would be euthanized if no rescue was found because of safety concerns.

When Humane Society of the Dunes pulled Bishop, Jane told an IACS volunteer that he had gone to an experienced foster home who had dog training experience. About two months later, she told the same volunteer that he had been adopted by a family. On December 19, 2023 the volunteer reached out to Jane to ask if there were any photos of Bishop in his home. Jane told the volunteer she would reach out to the foster/adopter to ask for photos. When asked for an update on December 28, 2023, the IACS volunteer stated they’d still not heard from Jane.

In February 2024, Humane Society of the Dunes posted on their (now deleted) Facebook page a number of strange “updates” about mostly IACS animals. On their “update” post about another dog named Vader, someone commented that they loved seeing all the animals Humane Society of the Dunes had saved. Humane Society of the Dunes then stated they were waiting for more pictures including some of Bishop. Which presumably, they should’ve had by February given they’d told the IACS volunteer in December that they’d asked for photos at that time. Even so, after that comment exchange, no photos of Bishop were ever provided by Humane Society of the Dunes.

Although Bishop was beloved at the shelter, he was not a dog for just any adopter. He was a young shepherd mix who would require training, enrichment, and socialization to be a good dog. He would be about 2.5 to 3 years old today.

If you adopted or fostered Bishop for Humane Society of the Dunes, we’d love an update on how he is doing. Please share this post with your friends in Northwest Indiana (NWI), especially within 50 miles of Chesterton (the adoption radius stated on the HSotD website). If you have any information on Bishop’s whereabouts, don’t be shy.

In addition to our $100 gift for proof of Bishop’s current whereabouts, an anonymous donor is offering a $500 gift for that proof because they knew and loved Bishop very much during his time at the shelter. They are desperate to verify that he’s okay. If you know where Bishop is, hopefully you will understand how much he was loved and how much his friends are worried for him. If you know something, please reach out.

Our post about Bishop was originally posted on February 20, 2025. It was updated on April 2, 2025 to standardize it with the format of our newer posts.
